The Kick-Off Meeting of the SMILE CITY project, which was hosted by the project coordinator ETRA, took place in National Research Council (CNR), Rome on February 3-4, 2025. Leading partners from different parts of Europe came together with the purpose of developing the grounds for this ambitious proposal, which will put circular economy solutions into urban mobility and infrastructure.
Horizon Europe-funded SMILE CITY is focused on the development of circular systemic solutions to offer a carbon-neutral, environmentally sustainable, and toxic-free urban environment by 2050. The project will create cycling paths and e-bike charging stations using recycled urban waste from construction materials, EoL tires, and EoL batteries from electric vehicles. This approach will not only contribute to reduced CO2 emissions but also increase sustainable mobility while promoting safer and more resilient urban infrastructure.
STRATAGEM plays a key role in the project, leading Work Package 7 (WP7)-Exploitation, and assuring that project results are transformed into impactful and market-ready solutions.
Moreover, STRATAGEM leads Task 5.5-Life Cycle Cost (LCC) Assessment, which will assess the economic viability of the project’s circular innovation.
With a strong focus on circular urban mobility, SMILE CITY will redefine the meaning of sustainable city infrastructure in line with EU Green Deal objectives and further develop a more resilient and resource-efficient Europe.
Special thanks to ETRA and CNR for organizing a successful and inspiring kick-off event.
Stay tuned for updates on this exciting journey toward circular, green, and smart cities!
