The CIVITAS DESTINATIONS program develops a set of innovative actions in order to implement sustainable mobility measures and actions in six European touristic cities with different characteristics but with similar challenges namely Limassol (Cyprus), Madeira (Portugal), Las Palmas (Spain), Valletta (Malta), Elba (Italy) and Rethymno (Greece).
The action ‘Safe Routes to School’ aims to promote the use of sustainable and safe modes for students to move to and from school. More specifically, it concerns travelling to school on foot, by bike, by bus or with carpooling. The use of sustainable mobility modes ensures a safer transfer with the minimum footprint to the environment.
Stratagem Energy Ltd in collaboration with Limassol Tourism Board have organized for a second year workshops in 18 Primary Schools where 886 students have participated!! Workshops have started on December 2018 and implemented on April 2019.
The primary schools that have participated in this action include Kato Polemidia IE (KB), St. Neophitos, Mesa Gitonia, Kontovathia, St. Nicholas, Linopetra, Apesia, IST’ Primary School, Moutagiaka, Germasogia A and B, Narek Primary School, St. John, Erimi, St. Nicholas, C’ Primary School, St. Panteleimonas, St. Anargiroi / Monis-Monagrouli and St. Athanasiou.
Students had the opportunity to use their bicycle through experiential workshops at the traffic park that was created in the school’s yard and develop their cycling skills!! Moreover, they move on foot in a specially designed area with exercises, pedestrian crossings and traffic signals and practice how to cross zebra crossings. Additionally, students attended a presentation on sustainable mobility modes and safety.
Students were very enthusiastic and motivated about the workshops and expressed their interest to repeat the action in the future!!
