CIVITAS DESTINATIONS project, an Innovation Action (IA), part-funded by the European Commission under the HORIZON 2020 Mobility for Growth program, was implemented over the past 45 years by a Consortium of 28 organizations from 12 European countries, plus China.
The main objective of the project is to test and evaluate integrated measures for enhancing sustainable mobility in cities facing a high touristic demand with the ambition to deliver a set of transferable solutions to cities facing similar challenges.
Trough the project’s life cycle, Stratagem, Limassol Municipality and Limassol Tourism Board have implemented several measures in Limassol, improving the mobility of locals and tourists.
The project focuses on encouraging the use of sustainable modes of transport including walking, cycling and public transport and promotes travelling in a more environmentally friendly way. The program also focuses on children, who can safely go to school by bike, on foot and car-pooling. One of the most important aspects of sustainable development is the enhancement of existing infrastructure including pavements, cycling paths, increase of available bikes for rental, e-bikes and development of information systems for parking availability to minimize unnecessary movement of vehicles in the city.
